The winds are changing.... D4RE will become a Mostly Hardware reviewing site.

So, It’s been over 4 months since I first set up d4re.com. It’s come a long way. But, There is one thing I should let my readers know. With this comes the change of what we will be reviewing. You will begin to see a lot less Software, and much more hardware. There will be the occasional review of a piece of software, but overall, D4RE will focus much more on Hardware. I hope you understand.

But, with this negative change comes something positive: I should be able to do a much higher quantity of reviews than before, so you can start checking this site regularly for any electronic that you may need reviewed.

The WD60C9 is one heck of a TV. It has great HD, 3 HDMI ports, 3D capability, and is a whopping 60″ big. At a retail price of around $1200, this is a great feature set for a cheaper TV. There are a few things to be aware of, though, before shelling out any money for the WD60C9.

The first is that Mitsubishi support is terrible. I spent 5 hours on the phone with 8 customer service representatives trying to figure out why part of the image on my TV was getting cut off. I never got an answer. Since this issue only happened when hooking up to my computer, I sent a note to Nvdia Support. There they found the TV, did some testing, and told me that it wasn’t what is called overscan, but A frequency issue. Who is at fault? Mistubishi. So for now, I’m using Nvidia’s resize desktop option and I’m running on slightly less than 1080p HD resolution. This is disappointing, because I bought the TV for full HD 3D, and I’m not getting full HD. But, I digress.

The other thing that is worth noting on the WD60C9 is how text appears on it. Long story short: Very poorly. It’s blurry, hard to read, and causes frequent squinting. This is only a real problem when you hook the Mitsubishi up to your computer, but is a definite issue if this is what you were planning on doing. Although, this one is hard to blame on Mitsubishi, because I believe that all DLP TVs have this issue.

Finally, the WD60C9 is not a true 120hz TV. This is a mistake that I made. I thought that all 3D TVs had to be True 120hz TVs. This is not the case. The WD60C9 is just a 3D TV that takes in a 60hz signal and outputs a 120hz one. So native 120hz is not a possibility.

Now that I’ve gotten all the bad things out of the way, I’ll let in the praise.

The WD60C9 has great colors, and outstanding HD. It is a great home theater TV, and I would buy it 9 times out of 10. As soon as they fix their issues, I would be glad to buy another Mistubishi HDTV.

The Xbox 36o. What to say? This is an amazing gaming console. I’ve had a few run-ins with Microsoft and the Xbox 360 before, but somehow I felt this experience was different. I feel that with the Jasper chipset (The one in all the new Xbox 260 Arcades) the Redmond based Mega-Corporation may have finally gotten it right.

Let’s start off with the basics.

1st: This version of the Xbox 360 Arcade, the one with the Jasper Chipset, overheats a lot less. I got a good 12 hours in before my first freeze, where I had to restart and everything worked fine again. That’s the only time I’ve had to restart it.

2nd: The new Arcades are very quiet. The disc drives are a significant amount less noisy.

3rd: The new Arcades use quite a bit less power than their older counterparts. Even the external power supply is noticeably smaller.

Like I had already said, the new Xbox 360 Arcades fixed a lot of the issues that the older Xbox 360s had. This was a nice and welcome change from my clunky and obnoxious Xbox 360 Elite.

Alright, now on to the good stuff. The games.

The games for the Xbox 360 easily blow the PS3 and Wii out of the water. No question about it. Sure, the wii has it’s novelty games, and the ones that are great party games, but none that would be even remotely fun to play by yourself. The PS3 has a few select great titles: MGS4 and Killzone 3. The Xbox 360 has games like Halo 3, Gears of War 2, DOA4, etc, etc. There really isn’t any comparision.

The graphics are a touchy subject. Put simply: Any game that is exclusively for the PS3 is going to look better than any game that is made exclusively for the Xbox 360, due in part to the extra 40gb of data that blu-ray games allow. But any game that is made for both the Xbox 260 and the PS3 looks better on the Xbox 360. I don’t know why it is, but it is.

Online play is amazing on the Xbox 360. Does it suck to pay $5 per month for online service? Yes, it does. Would I rather have PSN? Absolutely not. There really is no online experience quite like the Xbox 360s. It is very socially based. I have over 50 friends on Xbox Live, whereas, in the time I owned my PS3 (around 1 year) I had a total of 3 friends. The Xbox 360 is a socially driven machine, whereas the PS3 is driven by multimedia.

The one major downfall to the Xbox 360: The cost of ownership. Want a wireless adapter? That’ll be $80. Want an extra wireless controller? That’s $50. Want a hard drive? That’s $120. Nobody but Microsoft has the rights to make certain accessories for the Xbox 360, which can really make the cost of buying those accessories very high. It’s definitely something to watch out for.

I really enjoy the Nvidia 3d vision kit. I feel like this time around, the Television (and computer) industry will finally get 3D right.

Nvidia 3d Vision Kit

3D is coming. It’s coming fast, whether you like it or not. Nice thing to know if you’re a gamer is, Nvidia has you covered. Not to mention that these are the cheapest wireless 3d shutter glasses (of <del datetime="2010-02-17T06:01:49+00:00">descent</del> decent quality) that I have found to date.

The Nvidia 3d vision kit comes with everything you need to get your compatible system up and running, but there are a few requirements that even the most powerful systems in the world typically won’t even meet, so read carefully, or you may waste $200, and have hours of frustration.

First, and Foremost: You need a 120hz monitor or a 3D compatible DLP tv or a 3D projector.

Second: You need an Nvidia video card that is a 9800 or above.

Third: You should have at least a Dual-Core Processor or better.

For a full list of requirements, please, look here, and download the system checker to see if your system can run 3D.

Now that I’ve given you a full disclaimer, lets get to the reviewing.

First, the glasses. No complaints about the glasses. Well made, long charge, and great fit for anybody, even for those people that have prescription glasses. One thing to note: When the glasses have been inactive for 10min, the left eye will flash on and off. This isn’t a bad thing, but I thought you should know that this does not mean that your glasses are broken.

The emitter: Works well, but the drivers can be a little testy. You should be fine if you follow the instructions in the software.

The accessories: The kit comes with the following accessories:

2 usb cables

1 cleaning cloth

1 carrying pouch

3 nose pieces

These accessories are also very nice. You get the general feeling that Nvidia didn’t cut any corners in making these glasses, which is a nice, but rare, occurrence these days.

Last but not least, we have the software. The software is the one side that I feel could use a little improvement, which I feel is coming because of the constant updates. The only thing I’ve noticed is that you have to reinstall the software every time you want to update it. It doesn’t take that long, but it feels a little bit too much like itunes. This was minor, but I felt it needed to be mentioned. Another thing that is worth noting is the support for games. It just uses a modified Direct3d driver, so pretty much every single game you play will support 3d. The degree of support is completely dependant upon the game, but it seems to work pretty well for most major games. Check here for a full list of Nvidia supported games. There are plenty of games which work that are not on that list, but that list demonstrates all of the major games.

Last but certainly not least: The effect. This 3D is amazing. Absolutely amazing. I was not expecting the kind of results that I got from the 3D vision kit. I was expecting slightly mediocre 3d, because that was the only 3d I had seen before (I hadn’t yet seen avatar). This blew past those expectations, and then some. The only real way to understand the effect is to see it for yourself. Nvidia’s website has a list of 3D vision demoing stations, so if you can, get yourself down there and check them out. Then decide if you want to buy them or not.

I really enjoy the Nvidia 3d vision kit. I feel like this time around, the Television (and computer) industry will finally get 3D right.

Overall, Bioshock 2 is a good game. But there are a few minor things that keep it from being 100% perfect. That's why it earns a 4.5 out of 5.

Bioshock 2 Big Daddy

Bioshock 1 was an outstanding game, regardless of whether or not FPS games are your style. Well, Bioshock 2 only adds onto the Expansive story and city that is Rapture. The first thing you’ll notice is the visuals. I thought Rapture was amazing before, but this is just amazing. The second thing you’ll notice is your character. You now play as a big daddy, trying to protect your little sisters from the others, and choosing whether or not to harvest them. A lot of the Plasmids are the same, but to the same effect, a mass amount of Plasmids are new. The most important expansion though, are the guns. Even in the first 30 min of game, you are shown around the same amount of weapons as there were in the entire first game, and the list gets very big very fast.

The one thing that they really did to keep true to the Bioshock Saga was the Plot. With more twists and turns than the OJ Simpson trial, you’re going to find yourself knee deep in the drama of Rapture. But they kept the perfect amount of content from the first game in it, and really managed, even after all this time, to get me still wanting to play Bioshock more and more.

One thing any Nvidia 3d vision users will want to note: The game does have built in stereoscopic 3d support, but I saw far to much ghosting, to the point where I turned it off and gamed in 2d for the time being. This was unfortunate, but I’m sure Nvidia will release a new driver soon that will fix these problems. But for the time being, I wouldn’t get to vamped about the 3d support.

The multiplayer is good, but don’t be expecting a Call of Duty multiplayer thing here. The multiplayer is more of an added bonus. You buy it for the single player, and then play the multiplayer once you are bored with the single player. I could see it doing a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse. Again, I wasn’t really expecting much from the Bioshock 2 multiplayer, so this didn’t play a big factor in my review score.

Overall, Bioshock 2 is a good game. But there are a few minor things that keep it from being 100% perfect. That’s why it earns a 90%.

The Zune Pass is a subscription to the zune marketplace that allows you to download millions of songs, and pay a per month subscription, rather than paying per song. If you are someone with over 2000 songs in your itunes library, you’ve probably spent over $2000 getting those songs. Along with that, there is always new music, so you are always downloading more music, which can really add up fast if you pay 99c per song. This is where the Zune Pass is useful. Because it allows unlimited downloads, you can really download all the songs you could ever want, at a flat fee of just $15 per month. The only real problem that I have with the Zune Pass is the extensive DRM. You can’t copy it to an ipod, you can’t open it using windows media player, and if you get banned from Zune, (or Xbox Live) for that matter, you could loose all your songs. However, a person like myself uses only his Zune anyways, so this was not really an issue.

The one question you really need to ask yourself is “Do I download 15 songs or more per month” if the answer is yes, get the zune pass. It could save you heaps of money. If you don’t download more than 15 songs per month, I would advise not getting the Zune Pass. It really comes down to the simple mathematics of it.

This winter we got our hands on the Novint Falcon. It is a gun game controller with force feedback haptic response. In english, it goes “bang” when you shoot it. The Novint Falcon has amazing potential, that is held down by lacking software support by N-Vent and it’s drivers. The forces on the Falcon are amazingly realistic, the control scheme is perfect, and The Falcon is easier to use than any mouse I’ve ever used. But, Novint’s proudest technology doesn’t have a great game library. Unless you’re a die hard source fan, I would wait until it at least supports modern warfare 2 before buying the Falcon, because once that happens, their “High-Support” or “F-Gen HD” title support should pick up very quickly. Other than that, this is an amazing device, with one of the great features of it being a very active community, one where even the Novint CEO (tomnovint) is constantly spotted commenting. This means that if for some reason your Falcon breaks beyond repair, you can immediatly talk to the “Head Honcho” who will issue a refund or send you another one. I have yet to run into any hardware issue with the Falcon, but it’s nice to know I have that safe padding.
